Even though Tom is our firstborn, from about 18 months of age we could tell that something was different for him compared to his peers.
Tom became greatly distressed in situations that other children found exciting and fun. A visit to LEGO Land or a friend’s birthday party would often end in tears — Tom would cry hysterically until we had no choice but to leave early.
In the playground, instead of greeting other kids with a smile or a “hello,” Tom would scowl or completely ignore them. He was far more comfortable in the company of adults — children just weren’t his people.
All of this began to make sense as I embarked on a journey with Tom toward diagnosis and slowly educated myself about what being neurodivergent truly meant — not only for him, but for how we parented and supported him through the many challenges to come.
💔 The Reality of Diagnosis
Hearing the words Autism and ADHD for the first time was terrifying.
At that point, I had no idea what it meant for Tom’s future — who we could turn to, what support looked like, or how to navigate this new path. The uncertainty brought sorrow, and at times, a gripping fear for what lay ahead.
But as we began to understand more, the fear slowly gave way to clarity — and hope.
🌈 What I Want Other Parents to Know
To every parent of a newly diagnosed child: please know that it’s not your fault.
There’s nothing wrong with your child. They are different — not less.
With education, community, and the right kind of supports, you can help your child discover who they are and build the skills to live their happiest, most authentic life.
🌟 Tom’s Story Today
To give you a glimpse of what’s possible: Tom went from complete meltdowns even stepping onto school property in Prep, to being nominated by his peers as Sports Captain in Grade 6 this year!
Truly amazing — and a powerful reminder that with understanding, patience, and the right environment, growth can happen in beautiful and unexpected ways.
If we can get here — you can too.
